Uganda Orphan Skills Training Programme
The Uganda Orphan Training Center has been set up with the intention of helping vulnerable young children and those made orphans by AIDS/HIV. It aims to teach them life skills to enable them to take control of their own futures and live independent lives.
The Volunteer ProjectBegun in January 2000 by volunteers, the program was set up to support the increasing numbers of children who were either orphaned or vulnerable, and not attending school.
Because fees have to be paid to receive even the most basic education in Uganda, these children are often unable to attend, or cannot afford materials needed to learn. Additionally, in rural schools, there are limited places and consequently many children miss out on education.
As a volunteer in Uganda you’ll be giving training to children who attend a local vocational training skills center. Here they learn trades that will help them to get work such as bark cloth making, organic and animal farming, pottery, tailoring, construction and bricklaying, joinery and carpentry.
Other skills such electrics, plumbing and car mechanics are very welcome and the center is keen to teach these subjects too in addition to the ones already offered. Sport activities are considered very important so you can also help to coach netball, athletics and football. You may be asked to teach awareness classes on HIV/AIDS with project trainees, as well as giving classes to other community groups.
Other Volunteer Work
The center is still in the process of being built, so some dormitories and classrooms haven’t been fully completed. The center also needs to construct a reliable power system. Therefore, again, any skills in this area will be greatly welcomed by the center.
Project LocationThe project is based where the East African savannah meets the West African jungle. The people are warm and relaxed and generously welcome newcomers. The Orphan Center is located at Kyotera in South Western Uganda.
Accommodation & MealsYou’ll be sharing a safe and basic but comfortable house with other volunteers located on the edge of town. It is within easy reach of the center. There are western style toilets, but sometimes during shortages of water, collected water is used and you may have to wash from buckets. At the house, you’ll have a housekeeper, cook and night security man for your safety. Two meals are provided at the house daily, but a pack lunch is required to take to the center.
