Tanzania Orphan Care and Teaching
The AIDS/HIV epidemic has devastated Tanzania and left a lot of orphans in its wake. Many of them have little support from other relatives and live in orphanages all over Tanzania.
On this program you’ll be giving highly valued support to these young people by providing them with support, care and an education. Not only will you be helping these children but you’ll also be giving other underprivileged children a chance to go to community schools. Otherwise, they too wouldn’t be able to benefit from education because of the severe lack of teachers and resources in this country.
The Volunteer ProjectOn this program you’ll have the chance to help teach at one the local secondary community schools and also support and care for the children who go to “Hope” Orphan Day Care Center & Nursery.
Around twenty five young children between three and five attend the “Hope” Orphan Day Care Center & Nursery. When they are ready, they move on to the local secondary school, which has a hundred and seventy five children on its books. If they aren’t integrated with other children they would end up being ostracized and stigmatized by the society they live in.
Whilst volunteering in Tanzania, you have the choice of teaching essential academic subjects such Science, Math, English or Sport each day at the local secondary level school. Or you can work at the nursery each morning and go on to the secondary community school afternoons.
Project LocationYou’ll be located in the rural region around Mwanza City (meaning “The Rock City”) which is based near to Lake Victoria.
Accommodation & MealsYou’ll be accommodated in a very comfortable house which you’ll share with other volunteers. You might find yourself using the local taxi service (a mini bus called a “dala-dala”) to get to the nursery and schools, which are not very far away.
The house is gated and fenced, and located in a safe area. You’ll have your own cook and housekeeper working there, though all volunteers should contribute to keeping the house tidy and clean. A watchman/security guard patrols the premise and grounds at night.
You will receive breakfast and dinner, and if you return to the house at lunch times, you’ll receive a small lunch.
