French speaking Senegal is an excellent country to do voluntary work. It is also an wonderful country in which to sample the culture of West Africa. Long known for being one of the safest countries in Africa, it has many extraordinary and valuable volunteer projects.

Focusing on helping disadvantaged communities and people, the Senegal voluntary program also aims to give cultural experiences and knowledge not just for the volunteers, but for locals too. Rapidly becoming the top volunteer Gap Year stopping place, numerous placements are located in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.

A variety of available projects mean that  Senegal Volunteer Placements will give you  a profound insight into the poor communities and different cultures of Senegal. You will also see first hand the struggles and challenges that face them as they develop into a country that can offer a better life for all its peoples. Warmly welcomed into a local Senegalese family, you will have a genuine experience of daily life in this part of Africa.


Volunteer Role

The type of volunteer projects that you may join include:

  • Teaching English in Senegal schools and villages
  • Helping care for orphaned babies and children
  • Vocational teaching such as crafts, dressmaking, batik dyeing etc.
  • Care for disabled children
  • HIV/AIDS awareness and education
  • Helping with physiotherapy, or psychotherapy
  • Monitoring and care of animals in a zoo
  • Agricultural and irrigation projects
  • Journalism

Project Location

The community volunteer projects are mainly based in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Senegal is in West Africa.


Accommodation and Meals

Volunteers stay with local host families where they will also have meals. On some projects this may be really basic. You will however have a really authentic experience and the host families are chosen for their ability to offer a welcoming home.

Programme Summary:
You’ll have numerous schemes to choose from in this warm and wonderful country.  They range from journalism, teaching valuable craft subjects, helping orphaned children and children with disabilities, as well as irrigation and agricultural projects. Alongside this you’ll experience many of the amazing cultures that reside in this country.
