Lake Malawi Teaching Volunteers
Malawi is amongst the poorest of all the world’s countries. More than half of its population exist below the recognized poverty line and many earn less than thirty pence a day.
Each school we work with has to cope with a ratio of around 150 to 200 children to every permanent adult teacher. This project is one where you will very appreciated for giving you time and skills.
Volunteer RoleVolunteering on the Malawi teachers program will place you in one of our two rural local primary education schools that we have formed a partnership project with. With free primary school places being introduced into Malawi, there has been a substantial increase in children attending school. However the flip side of this progress is administration and access problems along with a decline in the quality of education.
You will be teaching subjects such as science, math, English, sports, creative and arts subjects, and you be encouraged to help with extra curricular after school activities should you wish to.
Accommodation & MealsYou will be based in a comfortable house shared by other volunteers on the project. It’s within cycling or walking distance of each school. You’ll probably be pleased to know too that the house is located on the beaches of Lake Malawi!
Free Time During your weekend free time you’ll be able to visit various high lights of Malawi’s landscape such as the Mulanje Massif or the National Parks. Program staff would be happy to help you organize trips so feel free to discuss possible visits with them.
You may just wish, alternatively, to relax on the shores of Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear, a village close by, has numerous small lodges that offer excellent scuba dives and snorkeling options.
