Kenya is one of the poorest countries in Africa and the population is greatly affected by unemployment, poverty and HIV/AIDS. There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to make a difference to those affected by such problems.

Volunteer Role

Volunteers spend 2 days a week in the slums of Nairobi taking part in the community support program. The remaining time is divided between working at a local hospital and at a day care centre/orphanage in Limuru.

This provides volunteers with the opportunity to spend time in Nairobi making a positive contribution to the health service, the possibility to gain an exceptional medical experience and also to make a profound input to the lives of people in the surrounding community

There will be many highlights to your worthwhile experience, some of which may be:
  • Helping in various orphanages in Limuru.
  • You will assist with improving the facilities and also become involved in the teaching and caring of the children
  • Gaining medical experience under the supervision of qualified doctors and nurses
  • Have the opportunity to really make a difference in the community and see life in the slums of Nairobi
  • Getting a taste of the true Kenyan culture
  • Learning a bit of Swahili!

Location

The project is located in Nairobi and Limuru, just outside Nairobi in the beautiful hilly countryside.

Accommodation and Meals

You will stay in a two-bedroom cottage, and share with other volunteers (with a maximum of four people in one room). A cook provides meals and there are house keeping and laundry services on a regular basis. Three meals a day are provided.

As the accommodation is situated in a Christian area the culture means that the local community sees drinking as ‘taboo’. Therefore no alcohol is allowed on the premises but there is a lovely restaurant nearby where volunteers can enjoy a few drinks in the evenings.
