Kenya Community Sports Programme
In Kenya’s rural areas, the communities cannot afford to provide a suitable educational program for their children. In local schools there are too many children to teach, and often teachers are not able to teach a curriculum that provides more than a standard education. Consequently physical and sports educations aren’t regarded as very important during a child’s schooling.
However you could help change this by spending four weeks on sports gap adventure in Kenya and help teach and coach a wide range of sporting activities to these children who live in very poor rural communities. Implementing a wide range of environmentally friendly projects, not only will you see the Real Kenya, but you will be highly rewarded by watching the benefits of your contribution to these local students and children.
Volunteer RoleYou will have the chance to volunteer at one of three different local communities in rural Kenya. Your skills will be put into practice by a wide scope of different tasks, ranging from low-level construction of netball hoops and football posts, to being able to coach a variety of sports. You will be very involved in the local communities and have the chance of making life long friendships.
The goal of your program will be to organise a local tournament involving various sports competitions such footballs or if you want to, you can run your own mini-Olympics with numerous athletics programs. Each tournament will be organised by the project volunteers with the help of a local project co-ordinator. With the participation of children and parents alike, this has proven to be a very popular and exciting culmination of this particular community project where everyone gets involved!
Project LocationThe program is located in South East Kenya, 50 kilometres from Mombassa
Accommodation & MealsLiving in safari camp-style tents permanently and solidly built on foundations, you will be part of a eco-friendly camp setting. Though they vary in size, the tents can accommodate up to six people and all are single sex. Western style toilet facilities are available on the camp.
Though there is a team of permanently employed cooks on site, who provide a range of local traditional meals using natural local produce wherever possible, you will have the chance to assist with food preparation. You will also be able to go along on food buying trips, visiting and enjoying local markets, where fresh fruit and produce will be purchased.
