Volunteering in Zimbabwe on this program will see you working in the tremendous Hwange National Park, one of Zimbabwe’s top wildlife conservation reserves.   You’ll be working as part of its management department, focused on continuing conservation in this national game reserve.  You’ll find it an exciting opportunity, and you’ll have the chance to, if you wish, to take an optional seven days visiting the Matobo national park, designated as a global heritage location.

You’ll be allowed access during this program to areas of essential conservation that are normally prohibited to any tourists visiting the park. Every day is varied as you work on a range of actives, such as sweeping for snares, counting elephants numbers, carrying out research on carnivores and working on community awareness & education projects. You will be based three hours from the magnificent Victoria Falls and you’ll have an opportunity in your free time to visit this amazing sight, alongside its numerous water adventure activities.

Volunteer Role

Working as a volunteer will allow you to access even the most remote corners of this leading African game park. You’ll will be privy to sights of great herds of buffalo, elephants, leopard and lion, which are rarely viewed by visiting tourists to Zimbabwe.

Project Highlights
You will have the opportunity of participating in vital procedures in caring for the wildlife in the area. This will include looking for hidden snares, darting animals that have been snared and subsequently removing the snares if required. You’ll be part of the process of counting and observing game.
  • Small carnivore research
  • Participation in studies monitoring elephant populations and their damage to vegetation
  • Wildlife population counts and snare checks on wildlife
  • Spoor transects and boundary patrols involving the assessment of what game has been in the area, assisting trackers in searching for signs of any illegal activity from poachers
  • Assisting game scouts in the darting of snared animals and the removal of snares
  • Gaining a deeper understanding of large-scale wildlife management and in-depth exploration of Zimbabwe’s most famous National Park

Project Location

You’ll be based in a safari-style camp located on the edge of the Hwange National Park.  It is a ten kilometer drive from main camp to the park’s entrance.   Recently renovated, the accommodation is simple but extremely comfortable.

Accommodation & Meals

You’ll share a same sex dorm-style room with around three other volunteers, sometimes less. Satellite television is on hand, and you’ll have access to a library, dining room, and games facilities. As a volunteer you’ll be able to use the lodge’s swimming pool.

Whilst on the Matobo program, you’ll be sleeping in chalets provided by the Matobo National Park. Again this is a simple but comfortable accommodation in the center of the national park. Each room will have three volunteers or less, and have full access to washing and bathing facilities.
