You’ll be part of team helping to make the quality of the poorest children and families in Guatemala better.
Volunteer Role on the Guatemala Outreach ProjectThere are numerous projects to get involved with if you decide to do a voluntary program in Guatemala. As with many developing countries, education is of vital importance and is often something that children from poor backgrounds have to go without. This education program really benefits from the time generously given by volunteers, which means children get to learn important subjects like mathematics, English, literacy and even computing. Skills such as handicrafts, and subjects that promote health such as physical education are vital too. Your interests and abilities are guarenteed to be utilized on this program.
Carpentry Carpentary is a very important and useful skill to have in Guatemala. This program aims to teach and equip local children with this knowledge as it may bring work for them when they’re older. It is certainly an essential skill to have. The workshop teaches the children how to use saws, hammers, measure and paint. Ten children are allocated to a class and volunteers are necessary to keep the classes running.
Building projects The program rents three buildings, and helped by volunteers aims to build more classrooms. You don’t need experience as you can learn from qualified builders on the project, but help is always needed.
Project LocationThe village of Alotenango is 14 kilometers from Antigua and known by locals as “Cakuxha” meaning “Home of Guacemayas.”
Set 1388 meters above sea level, it is surrounded by local volcanoes called Fuego and Agua as well as the mountains of Coco, Sonay, El Astillero, and Soledad.
Accommodation: Host familiesMost volunteers will stay with local Guatemalan host families. The families are all good friends of staff working at the projects. To help you improve your Spanish, they will talk to you mostly in Spanish, but some members of the familes do speak a little English.
