As Ghana proved at the 2006 World Cup, there’s a wealth of talent in the country waiting to be encouraged and developed and this is an amazing opportunity to play a very important part in this process.
The volunteer football project involves helping children from numerous disadvantaged backgrounds: orphans, children with disabilities, and street children. Here in Ghana they have been gathered together for a very special project developing their talents through football, while also giving them the much needed opportunity of education, housing and meals.
Volunteer Role The volunteer football programme is open to anyone of any level. You don’t have to possess qualifications in football coaching, only to understand the rules of the game and want to teach.
- Assist coaches in football classes – through skill development, coordination skills, game preparation and training drills
- Help in the organization of training sessions and competitions
- Referee short games for children at the project and in the local community
- Give advice and lessons on football tactics
- Teach new sports exercises and provide advice on health issues and requirements
- Take part in football camps and local tournaments
- Optional teaching within the academy or local schools
At the Football Academy we have 30 full-time children aged between 12 and 17, who are permanently linked as members of the project. However, as there are at least another 120 children hoping to join, you will understand how valuable your contribution is to the project and how powerful Football is helping to educate young people. Passing on your skills and experience as you get to know these children better will be one of the most rewarding moments of your life.
Project LocationThe Football Academy program is located in the Ghanaian capital of Accra.
Project Age LimitMinimum age 17, maximum decided on potential participant’s health
Accommodation and MealsAll meals and accommodation are included in the football volunteer programme. Each volunteer is allocated a local host family in order to be immersed fully into an authentic cultural experience. Host families are carefully chosen to give each volunteer a safe environment to settle into during their stay and act as a support network for each participant. Host families usually live within a 15-20 minute journey from the project.
