Florida Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer
The centre needs volunteers to help it carry out daily activities. If you have a particular skill such as landscaping, mechanics, carpentry or maintenance you will have plenty of opportunity to use these skills during your time at the sanctuary.
Occasionally you may have the possibility to help out with tour groups in order to educate the public as to why wild animals aren’t good pets, and also about animal endangerment and extinction.
Volunteer RoleThe Wildlife Sanctuary depends on volunteers to support the centre and help care for the injured, orphaned and rescued animals. Resident animals range from big cats, such as leopards, cougars and tigers to primates, wolves, bears and native American animals.
During your time at the sanctuary, some of the tasks you may become involved with include:
- Animal care
- Cleaning cages
- Food preparation and feeding
- Cage construction
- Fundraising
- Data entry
- Grounds maintenance
- Sorting fresh produce, rotating food supplies and enrichment.
LocationNear Zolfo Springs, Florida (approx. 1.5 hrs from Orlando)
Accommodation and MealsYou will stay in shared living quarters either in static caravans or small cabins on the sanctuary grounds. The accommodation is basic but comfortable with private bathrooms with hot showers, air conditioning, electricity, TV, VCR and DVD.
Female volunteers usually stay in the cabins while male volunteers live in the static caravans.
Meals are home-cooked and most of the cleanup and cooking duties are rotated among participants. Vegetarian or vegan meals are available upon request.
