This conservation project based around protecting the endangered African Elephant enables you to work alongside local communities and wildlife to help preserve these precious animals in Namibia. Volunteering on this project, you’ll be integral to this very rewarding conservation program which is vital to helping maintain the desert populations of elephants in this part of Africa.
If you take part in this Real Gap wildlife African Volunteer program, you’ll be focused on two particular areas: working with the local people of Namibia and working with the desert elephants.
You’ll be helping to teach the nearby farmers how to control conflicts with these animals alongside building protection schemes to safe guard vital sources of water as well as other resources. You will help to monitor the elephants and identify them in fieldwork, as well as tracking and monitoring herds in the wild.
Some other volunteers have in the past helped to create additional water drinking points so that the elephants don’t use the same ones as local farmers. Other project aims is help farmers develop schemes that tap in the huge potential for tourism in the area.
The Desert Elephant Project is one of our Namibia volunteer projects, in Southern Africa. It is based in the north west of the Namib Desert in what is locally known as Damaraland.
