Your role as a volunteer will be flexible and varied and there will be the chance for you to use your own creativity to devise activities for the children to partake in.
Volunteer RoleThe work you undertake as a volunteer will be diverse but fundamentally you will be expected to plan and organize activities for the children that you feel are suitable. The volunteer centre provides you with suggestions, assistance and educational materials to help you design the activities. Generally volunteers are responsible for the following:
- Arranging educational games and activities
- Teaching children arts and crafts
- Organising sports and other physical activities
- Playing with the children
Here are some suggested outdoor games and activities that you can do when working with the children: make bookmarks, mosaics, musical instruments, making puppets, organizing charades, hopscotch and races amongst the children.
You will have the choice to volunteer at one of the following day care centers or schools:
- Betania Elementary School
- Josefita Jurado Elementary School
- Santa Paula Elementary School - Kindargarten Personitas (Little People)
- Teaching English Programme in Montezuma
- San Agustín de Guápiles Primary School
- Musical Kindergarten
- Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Elementary School
- Ana Frank Day Care Centre
- Casa del niño Day Care Centre
If you book this program we will require you to list your top two preferences in regards to your volunteer placement. Once you have arrived in Costa Rica, our volunteer coordinator will take you to see the various day care centers and schools and allow you to make your final choice.
LocationThe day care centers and schools are mainly located in and around San José, Costa Rica’s capital city. There are, however, a few more options located further a field if you want to experience other parts of Costa Rica.
Accommodation and MealsYou will stay with a Costa Rican host family who will have been carefully chosen to ensure that you are in comfortable, clean and safe accommodation. Your host family provides you with a private bedroom and two daily meals.
