Orphanages and homes have been set up all throughout Costa Rica and although this has happened in coordination with government authorities, there is a huge shortage of help available to care for the children who have been neglected, abused, abandoned or orphaned.

Volunteer Role

Volunteers undertake various types of work according to the home’s needs, which differ every day. The work schedule is adaptable and the project coordinator will help to work out a timetable for you on your first day. The tías (carers referred to as “aunts” by the children) at the homes are often extremely overworked and tired, so volunteers are likely to plan activities in advance for the children and are encouraged to organize whatever activities they feel are appropriate. Generally volunteers will be doing the following:
  • Educational games and activities
  • Teaching children arts and crafts
  • Organising sports and other physical activities
  • Playing with the children
  • Help the “tías” in the home and in the kitchen.
  • Help the “tías” to bathe the children and also to feed them.
Some of the suggested games and activities that you can do when working with the children include making paper hats/paper chains, potato printing, finger painting, hopscotch, Simon says, charades hot potato, and baking fairy cakes or cookies.

Location

The homes and orphanages are located in a number of different neighborhoods in San José, Costa Rica’s capital city. All volunteer locations are within easy access from your residence by bus.  Choose from:

1.Temporary Home for Abandoned Children Hogar de Maria
2. Orphanage in Vista de Mar
3. Temporary Home for Abandoned Children in Guapiles (Female only)
4. Temporary Home for Abandoned Children Hogar Blanca Flor (Female only)
5. Temporary Home for Abandoned Children Hogar Curridabat (Female only)

Accommodation and Meals

During your time as a volunteer you will stay with a Costa Rican host family. These families are carefully selected to ensure clean, comfortable and safe lodging and provide you with a fantastic opportunity for you to practice your Spanish.

The host family will provide you with a private bedroom, two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) and will take care of your laundry for you.
