On this program you can enjoy a guided tour to a world famous orangutan rehabilitation centre, stand at the base of the highest peak in South East Asia and absorb the culture and food of Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

This is an ideal experience for those who want to study the conservation of orangutans, proboscis monkeys and the rare and very loveable pygmy elephant of Borneo, whilst having the luxury of a very comfortable accommodation.

Volunteer Role

Your volunteer experience will begin when you cross into the breathtaking lower Kinabatangan rainforest, home to orangutans, sunbears, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and the pygmy elephant. A great part of the program concentrates on the conservation of the pygmy elephant. The chief danger to these elephants is the loss of continuous forests. Mammals of their size need great feeding grounds and viable breeding populations with significant male to female ratios.

You will help to monitor their migration patterns along the river; explore issues of human conflicts and elephant attitudes and behavior towards local villages; you will also help to make locals aware that the pygmy elephant is an vital natural asset and heritage to the location.

Note:The observation and monitoring of the pygmy elephants is through the river safari. This will involve speedboat cruises along the river in order to sight pygmy elephants on the riverbank.

Location

The Borneo Pygmy Elephant Conservation project is situated in the Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah, Borneo.

Accommodation and Meals

Your first night and the last two nights on the project you will stay in dorm style accommodation in Kota Kinabalu.

While you volunteer, your residence will be at a serene eco-lodge, alongside the river of Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah. It has very comfortable rooms and all mod con facilities. Food during you stay at the eco-lodge will consist of buffet meals, mainly delicious Malay cuisine.
